Pune: Cycle track on Hadapsar road stretch becomes a trash site

PUNE: The pavement along the Hadapsar gliding centre on Pune-Saswad Road has turned into an eyesore owing to dumping of waste along the cycle tracks and beautification work highlighting wari culture. This is the route taken by the waris every year.

Former corporator Vaishali Bankar said, “The Pune-Saswad Road, also known as Sant Dnyaneshwar Palkhi Marg, is well maintained. But people dump garbage on the road and cycle tracks. People riding on bikes throw trash while on way to work. A large number of people who visit the gliding centre for morning and evening walks complain about garbage menace.”

“The civic body cannot maintain round-the-clock vigil to deter people from throwing garbage. We can think of solving the problem if all political parties, social activists and others come together to create awareness among the public at large,” he added.

A regular jogger said, “People in Hadapsar are lucky to have such an open space on the gliding centre ground, but the garbage menace is a problem. Heaps of garbage lie strewn along the cycle track, the median gardens and sometimes along the boundaries of the ground. The civic body cleans some patches regularly, but unless people develop a civic sense and stop throwing garbage, the place will continue to stink.”

Hadapsar-Mundhwa ward officer Prasad Katkar said, “We clean the roads regularly, but people throw garbage again. There are some spots which are ignored, which I will ask our conservancy staff to clean. However, keeping in mind that it is also the route taken by the palkhi every year, people may want to avoid throwing garbage on the spot.”

Prashant Surse, a resident of Gondhalenagar, said, “The Pune-Saswad Road has a cycle track of about 800 metres, with garbage lying around. On Tuesday, a two-wheeler rider stopped to throw garbage on the track, catching the person riding behind him unawares. He tried to stop the bike but collided with a dumper.”
