Pundits mull Cody Gakpo price tag as Leeds United target nets another World Cup goal

Former England international Joe Cole believes Leeds United target Cody Gakpo is worth a whopping £80m based on his World Cup performances alone.

The Dutch forward continue his fine form out in Qatar on Tuesday afternoon, helping the Netherlands qualify for the knockout stages of the World Cup.

Gakpo has scored in all three games for Louis van Gaal's side and so far looks to have been the player of the tournament.

Leeds wanted to sign the forward last summer but were ultimately unable to convince PSV Eindhoven to sell up.

And after failing to land him last summer, they will likely have missed the boat on signing Gakpo this summer too.

The 23-year-old's price tag has skyrocketed following his strong performances for PSV and the Netherlands, with Manchester United heavily linked with the Dutchman.

One of Europe's hottest prospects right now, Gakpo looks destined for huge things on the world stage, so much so Cole would feel completely comfortable paying £80m for the talented forward.

"He [Cody Gakpo] would’ve gone into this tournament, he’d have been, all the top databases of all the top clubs, and I know there’s been scouts watching him, he’s come to the tournament, he’s fearless, great movement for the goal, fantastic finishing, he’s going to be high on everybody’s wish list," Cole said on ITV.

The former West Ham and Chelsea man was then asked by fellow pundit Nigel de Jong if he would pay £80million for Gakpo.

"I would. 100 percent, because he’s young," Cole responded. "We know there’s a value on youth because you’re buying in, if it don’t quite work out you’re gonna cut your losses elsewhere but he looks like the real deal.

"I know it’s Qatar, I know it’s not one of the stronger nations. Ecuador he scored, Senegal he scored, he affects the game, and players that affect the game that’s where the value is.

"I really like him, I liked what I’ve seen of him at PSV and I’m sure there will be some offers on the door at PSV in January."
