Puffy Cloud vs Puffy Royal: Which boxed mattress is right for you?

The Puffy Royal mattress next to the Puffy Cloud Mattress.

Puffy offers some of the biggest discounts in the mattress world, making its mattresses strong contenders for those in the market for a new bed. In this Puffy Cloud vs Puffy Royal battle, we’ll look at whether an all-foam or hybrid mattress is the right fit for your sleeping style, and if either of these mattresses are worth investing in.

Like many of the best mattresses of 2024 for all sleepers, both Puffy mattresses use high-quality materials to provide sleepers with a combination of comfort and support. But, as you might imagine from their different construction, the Puffy Cloud and the Puffy Royal provide different sleeping experiences. This comparison article will help you to decide between the two.

As mentioned above, Puffy discounts are always generous but with the Black Friday mattress sales coming up in November, you might get an even larger discount if you’re prepared to wait until then. So, let’s see which is best suited to your sleeping style.

Puffy Cloud vs Puffy Royal: Materials & Design

  • The Puffy Cloud is a 10” memory foam mattress with six layers
  • The Puffy Royal is a 14” hybrid mattress with 10 layers
  • The Puffy Cloud is an all-foam mattress, whereas the Puffy Royal is a hybrid

The Puffy Cloud starts with a polyester blend soft cover that’s hypoallergenic and stain-resistant (you can also zip it off to wash it). Underneath the cover is Puffy’s ‘Cooling Cloud’ gel memory foam layer for pressure relief, followed by a transition layer of responsive polyfoam to manage temperature.

The base layer is a 6” layer of high-density foam to stabilize the mattress, rounded off by a grip base cover to prevent the mattress from sliding about. All the foams in the Puffy are Certi-PUR US certified, meaning they’re free from harmful chemicals and heavy metals, as well as being produced without certain toxic materials.

Like the best hybrid mattresses, the Puffy Royal is made with a combination of foams and coils. Starting at the top, there’s a quilted cover with cooling yarns meant to help with temperature regulation. Next up are two thin layers consisting of a blended wool filling and a climate fiber layer, both again designed to help with cooling.

The following four layers are all foam layers, starting with a one-inch thick infused cooling foam. After this you’ll find a reflexive memory foam layer and a Cloud Comfort pressure relief foam to help keep your spine correctly aligned. The last foam layer is a Cloud Sculpting foam, with five zones to provide support for your head, neck, shoulders, backs and legs.

There’s a six inch coil layer for stability and motion isolation, followed by firm core support foam to keep the structure of the mattress intact. Like the Puffy Cloud, the Puffy Royal is finished off with a grip base cover.

Puffy Cloud vs Puffy Royal: Support & Comfort

  • The Puffy Cloud is a medium firm mattress which we rate as a 7/10
  • The Puffy Royal is a medium soft mattress which we rate as a 6/10
  • Both mattresses excel at motion isolation

The Puffy Cloud is rated at around 6/8 out of 10 on the firmness scale, with our testers feeling that it slept at seven out of 10. In our Puffy Cloud mattress review we felt that the mattress was particularly suited to back sleepers who experienced aches and pains, with the firm surface providing plenty of pressure relief and lumbar support.

This isn’t surprising, as many of the best mattresses for back pain have a medium firm feel. But if you’re looking for the traditional memory foam ‘hug’, the Puffy Cloud isn’t the one for you – side sleepers who like a firmer feel will enjoy it, but it’s not soft enough for lightweight sleepers who may feel there’s not enough cushioning and pressure relief.

The Puffy Royal is a softer mattress, rated at six out of 10 and providing an ultra-plush feel. In our Puffy Royal mattress review, our tester found that the mattress gradually sunk as they slept on it, but still provided plenty of pressure relief and support for neutral spinal alignment.

The mattress is best suited to side and back sleepers but is far too soft for stomach sleepers and those of a heavier build. Both mattresses also do an excellent job of isolating motion transfer, so could be great options if you share your bed with a restless partner.

Puffy Cloud vs Puffy Royal: Temperature Regulation

  • The Puffy Cloud has a cool-touch cover and a layer of gel foam
  • The Puffy Royal has layers of cooling foam and climate fiber
  • Both mattresses do a good job of keeping sleepers cool

Considering the Puffy Cloud is an all-foam mattress, it does a great job of keeping sleepers cool at night. Although it’s not a specialist cooling mattress, the cool to the touch cover and gel-infused foam did a great job of keeping our testers comfortable at night, although the cover was a little slippery.

The Puffy Royal also has a cool-touch quilted cover, followed by a thin layer of blended wool to wick away moisture. Underneath this is another thin layer of climate fiber, which allows for additional airflow. It then also includes a layer of gel-infused foam, along with well-spaced coils that help to promote airflow.

Of course, neither of these mattresses are specialist cooling beds so, if you sleep particularly hot, we’d recommend investing in one of the best cooling mattresses instead.

Puffy Cloud vs Puffy Royal: Which should you buy?

Buy the Puffy Cloud if…

You suffer with aches and pains: The Puffy Cloud did a particularly good job at alleviating aches and pains for back sleepers.

You sleep warm but want an all-foam mattress: Although it won’t be cooling enough for really hot sleepers, the vast majority will find that the Puffy keeps them cool and comfortable throughout the night.

You’re a side sleeper who enjoys a firmer feel: The medium firm feel of the Puffy Cloud means that, whilst there’s plenty of contouring, side sleepers who prefer a firmer feel will find it most comfortable.

Buy the Puffy Royal if…

You want a memory foam ‘hug’: Despite being a hybrid, the many layers of foam on the Puffy Royal give the mattress plenty of contouring and sinkage, whilst still providing support.

You share a bed: Both mattresses do a great job of isolating motion, but the Puffy Royal’s softer top layers help keep sleepers in one position, preventing any motion transfer.

You’re a side sleeper: The Puffy Royal is perfect for side sleepers thanks to its soft-medium feel and contouring layers of foam.
