THE funeral arrangements of legendary SNP politician and independence activist Winnie Ewing have been revealed.
A spokesperson for the Ewing family said all were welcome at a public memorial service, which will be held at Inverness Cathedral on Saturday, July 15 at 2pm.
A separate private event for family and friends will be held next week.
Ewing cemented her place in the annals of the history of her party and the independence cause in 1967 when she won Hamilton for the SNP, beginning a period of unbroken representation in Westminster for the party which lasts to this day.
The family’s spokesperson said they had received messages of condolences following Ewing’s death at the age of 93 last week.
“We have heard a myriad of anecdotes of happy experiences of Winnie over her long and successful time as MP, MEP and MSP,” a family spokesperson said.
“These have been of great comfort to the family.”
The private service will be held in Bearsden on June 29.
Ewing, whose children Fergus and Annabelle are both serving SNP MSPs, was the presiding officer when the Scottish Parliament was opened in 1999.
She started the session with the words: “The Scottish Parliament, adjourned on the 25th day of March, in the year 1707, is here-by reconvened.”
