'Pub quiz, beer and hugging my dog': Niall Currie reveals post-match plans after 'torturous' afternoon

Niall Currie revealed he was going to unwind with a pub quiz, some beers and 'hugging my dog' after going through the "torture" of Portadown's crucial basement win over Carrick Rangers.

The Ports claimed a massive 3-1 victory at Shamrock Park to boost their survival hopes.

They now trail Dungannon Swifts by just two points with two games remaining - with a trip to Stangmore Park up next in seven days' time.

Currie's side led 2-0 and then 2-1, but Cathair Friel scored his second of the day late on to complete the win.

"I'm not too sure my blood pressure is okay right now," Currie joked on BBC Sportsound.

"I think I might have a wee check on Monday. I am actually due to get a few blood tests on Monday. I'm on 4mls at the minute but that might go up to 20.

"It is what it is. It is what I love.

"And it is days like that which are so hard. We know what is riding on the occasion, so to come away with three points is unbelievable.

"We were very good in the first half, and 2-0 could maybe have been three. Maybe we were being a bit greedy feeling like that.

"We looked a bit jittery in the second half, and once Carrick got that goal it is torture time on the sidelines. But we have a few youngsters there who did rightly today.

"We always ask them to empty their tank and go out on their shield. And it has been a long road the past few months but I am very proud of them."

Currie says he thought Portadown's survival hopes had "burst" after Tuesday night's defeat to Newry City.

He added: "Tuesday night was disappointing. It was a pin in the balloon type thing where I thought we had maybe blew it.

"We had cut the gap back and got closer and closer, and Tuesday night was an opportunity to go into today's game only two points behind Dungannon.

"So I think for the players to bounce back today, it is full credit to them. I am sure it wasn't too pretty on the eye but I am sure it was exciting for our supporters.

"And the crowd was bouncing all over the place at the end. That is what football is about, but it is not good for your health."

As for the rest of his Saturday evening, Currie said he was heading to a pub quiz before enjoying a couple of beers with his dog.

"I am going to relax tonight," he joked.

"There is a pub quiz on here and I will stay for a couple of hours, then I will head home for a couple of beers and hug my dog."
