Pub party brawl, mum lured to her pre-dug grave and tribute to 'legend' dad

These are the latest Liverpool ECHO headlines this morning.

Thug stabbed man in front of families after row at pub's beach party

A drunken man repeatedly stabbed a stranger with a kitchen knife after a row broke out at a beach themed party.

Gareth Parr, 19, and his uncle Frankie Parr, 33, appeared before Liverpool Crown Court on Wednesday (November 16) to be sentenced for the attack at the Vine Tavern pub on Elephant Lane in St Helens. The court heard how both men were drunk at the pub, where a beach themed party was being held on the evening of August 6 this year, and families were present.

Gareth Parr had to be warned about his behaviour before the decision was made not to serve him any more alcohol. The 19-year-old left the pub and returned a short time later armed with a long kitchen knife concealed in his clothing.

At this time, his uncle Frankie Parr was talking to another pubgoer, Steven Rigby, when the conversation became heated. Liverpool Crown Court heard how Mr Rigby was the first to throw a punch at Frankie Parr but it was not clear why.

Frankie Parr took hold of Mr Rigby and pinned him to the bar before repeatedly punching him. The court heard how Gareth Parr then stepped in and escalated the violence by stabbing Mr Rigby in the back with a kitchen knife.

CCTV cameras captured the victim falling to the floor as Frankie Parr kneed and kicked him. Martin Walsh, prosecuting, told the court once Mr Rigby fell to the floor "he's unconscious, legs out underneath him." Read more here.

Haunting warning from murder victim's family after mum was lured to her own grave

The family of a mum who was lured to her pre-dug grave and killed with an axe issued an emotional warning as her murderer was sentenced yesterday.

Katie Kenyon's ex-boyfriend, Andrew Burfield, had denied the killing for months, but on Wednesday, day three of the murder trial, he changed his plea to guilty, with Mr Justice Goose bringing Burfield back to Preston Crown Court yesterday (Thursday, November 17) to be sentenced. Mum-of-two Katie was last seen getting into a van in Padiham, near Burnley, on April 22 this year.

Police quickly launched a public appeal to find the 33-year-old, with her body being found on April 29 in the Forest of Bowland, and a postmortem examination concluded she had died from head injuries.

Burfield, 50, first appeared in court on Monday, November 14, as the three-week trial got underway, with it being heard that he allegedly took Katie on a picnic on April 22 when she challenged him to knock a can of coke off her hand with an axe, as reported by Lancs Live.

Burfield, of Todmorden Roa, Burnley, claimed he told police it would "take her arm off" throwing the axe towards a tree instead, but the weapon hit Katie in the head instead and killed her with a single blow. The grave Katie was found in was so well concealed that a forensic archaeologist couldn't find it, the prosecution told the jury, with police only able to find it when Burfield showed officers where it was. The devastated family and friends of a man who died while on holiday in Spain have paid tribute.

Dave Fearnley, also known as "big Dave" and "Crock", was on holiday with three friends when he started complaining of feeling sick. As his group went out for the night, the 68-year-old from Warrington, said he was feeling "awful" and was going to stay at the hotel.
