Pub addresses 'gossip' and rumours over possible change in management

A Nottingham pub has been forced to address rumours on its social media channels over the future of its management. The Monkey in Bulwell was the subject of a discussion on Facebook after local residents spotted an advert for new management online.

The pub, which is located on Main Street, took to Facebook to tackle what it called 'gossip' and put the rumours to rest. They stated that the staff were just following the law around pub refurbishments by advertising online. They confirmed that no one will be going anywhere and the pub will continue under current management.

The team wrote: "Bulwell community please ignore the post flying around as the ownership of the Monkey won’t be changing. As we all know some Bulwell residents love a good gossip but that’s just what it is - GOSSIP."

They added: "The pub is advertised online because it’s due a refurbishment and has to be advertised by law and the pub code guidelines. As for any other information relating to the owners or staff, it’s total rubbish. I will be signing a longer-term deal in the coming week."

"The monkey is still the best pub in Bulwell and it will be continuing as normal under the current management and staff structure. Anyone with questions should actually come in and speak to the management and staff. These lies are not helpful to anyone and only serve as this afternoon's chip paper."

The pub was built as an Edwardian corner pub in 1908 by Evans and Son architects for J. Shipstone and Sons. The pub rebranded itself in 2019 but had been known as the Framesmith's Arms before that. Despite the official name, locals had been referring to the pub as the Monkey for years, as a previous landlord was thought to have kept one as a pet.

The advert which is still visible online states: "The Monkey provides guests with an intimate, cosy setting in one long room with a tiled floor and lounge area to the right. The rear patio is home to many tables and a sheltered smoking area. When visiting the Facebook page, you can see locals embroiled in lively and fun-filled karaoke nights, all coming together for a fantastic night out in an unpretentious venue where they can be themselves. The Monkey is the pub where everyone knows your name." Nottinghamshire Live attempted to contact the pub for further comment.
