Some people seem to move through life without a clearly defined destination. They work, socialize, watch shows, meet friends and handle everyday responsibilities, but when someone asks, “What do you want to achieve?” they struggle to answer. It is easy to label such people as lazy, unambitious or directionless, but psychology offers a more nuanced explanation. A lack of goals can reflect uncertainty, low motivation, fear of failure, an absence of personally meaningful values or simply a period of transition. Researchers studying motivation, self-determination, goal setting and purpose in life suggest that having direction is psychologically important, but the absence of a grand ambition does not automatically mean something is wrong.
