Psychology says people who never leave dishes in the sink overnight aren’t necessarily obsessed with cleanliness, it may be their brain reacting to visual clutter

For some people, the day cannot properly end while the kitchen still looks unfinished. Dinner is over, everyone has gone to bed, but a few plates remain in the sink. Instead of leaving them for the morning, they wash them, wipe the counter and make sure the kitchen looks settled before switching off the lights.

It is easy to dismiss this as a sign of being unusually neat or even “obsessed” with cleanliness. But psychology offers a more nuanced explanation. Research into visual clutter, unfinished tasks and people's relationship with their home environment suggests that disorder can affect how people experience their surroundings. For some, an untidy sink may be less about dirt and more about the visual reminder that something remains incomplete.
