That’s it. Mats Hummels is still shaking his head over the penalty decision that allowed Luuk de Jong to equalise early in the second half. The former PSV player Donyell Maden, Dortmund’s only effervescent attacker, had put them ahead with a deflected cross-shot in the first half.
It wasn’t a great game, in truth, but the result sets things up nicely for the second leg next month.
90+6 min A dangerous low cross from Dest is welted to safety by Maatsen. Time is almost up for PSV.
90+3 min Hummels’ clearance goes as far as Veerman 25 yards out. He has a quick touch and pings a drive over the bar.
90+1 min Six minutes of added time. Hummels wipes out another PSV player with a strong ball-first sliding challenge; this time the referee decides it’s a clean tackle.
90 min: PSV substitution Boscagli limps off to be replaced by Armando Obispo.
89 min Boscagli has hurt himself while clearing the ball. It looks like a hamstring problem and the physio is on.
88 min Teze’s cross is well blocked by Wolf and Dortmund break. Brandt’s cutback is importantly cut out, I think by Veerman. A Dortmund winner would be harsh on PSV.
84 min Teze’s bouncing cross is knocked back to his keeper by Hummels, who winces in a manner that instantly tells us which part of the body he used.
83 min: PSV substitution Mauro Junior on, Ismael Saibari off.
82 min: Dortmund substitutions Youssoufa Moukoko and Salih Ozcan come on for Niclas Fullkrug and Donyell Malen, who was by far Dortmund’s best attacker.

81 min Dest beats Ryerson on the left edge of the area with some neat footwork, then blasts a shot towards the near post that is beaten away by Meyer. The angle was very tight.
79 min Dortmund have offered very little going forward since Malen/Dest put them ahead. You’d still fancy them to go through if it stays like this, but PSV will take a bit of confidence from the way this game has gone.
75 min: Chance for PSV! Bakayoko receives De Jong’s flick on, cuts inside Maatsen with ease on the edge of the area – and shoots tamely straight at Meyer. That was a better chance than the one he had in the first half.
It’s been a bitty performance from PSV, but on chances they could easily be a goal or two ahead.
75 min: PSV substitution Ricardo Pepi replaces Hirving Lozano, who faded after a strong first half.
72 min: Good save by Benitez! The free-kick almost leads to a goal. Maatsen’s free-kick is behind Wolf, who improvises brilliantly to flick a volley towards the near post. His arms are starting to go up in celebration of a memorable goal when Benitez moves smartly to his right to push it away.

65 min An ambitious/feckless shot from Lozano goes high and wide. PSV continues to dominate, though, with Dortmund struggling to turn the attacking tap back on after spending half an hour protecting their lead.
63 min: Dortmund substitution Julian Brandt replaces Marco Reus.
62 min Teze feeds a simple pass into Saibari, 25 yards out. He has a scandalous amount of time to turn onto his left foot and scorch a shot over the bar. That was half a chance.
61 min A dangerous inswinging corner from Sancho reaches Malen beyond the far post, a few yards out. He controls the ball on the chest but it won’t sit down and he flicks it over the bar. A PSV defender may have got a touch as well, though a goalkick was given.
59 min Ryerson’s driven cross is controlled expertly on the chest by Malen, backing away beyond the far post. He waits for the ball to bounce and swishes a shot from a tight angle that hits the keeper Benitez and flies behind for a corner. Benitez’s positioning was really good.
59 min That’s De Jong’s 28th goal of the season and his eighth in the Champions League. It’s a cracking story.
57 min Hummels goes to chat with the referee before the kick-off. He looks like a mathematician who has just been told that four is an odd number now.

It looked like a really good block tackle from Hummels on Tillman. He slid into Tillman, leading with his studs, and got a reasonable amount of the ball. After that he followed through into Tillman, tripping him in the procnss.
It wasn’t as clean as a tackle as I first thought, and in the modern game those are often given as fouls. Yep, the decision is upheld. Hummels is flabbergasted – he’s still making a VAR sign with the penalty about to be taken. I don’t think it was a foul, for what it’s worth. (The square root of bugger all.)

51 min Dortmund are asking for trouble by sitting on their 1-0 lead. I know it’s human nature, and I know even a 1-1 draw would be a very good result, but they are taking a risk by allowing PSV to dominate possession like this.
49 min Veerman’s long-range shot deflects a few yards wide of the right-hand post. He takes the corner himself and it’s headed away.
48 min Teze’s imaginative low cross looks set to reach De Jong 15 yards out, but Hummels stretches to make a vital interception. That may well have saved a goal.
46 min PSV get the second half under way. They haven’t lost at home since November 2022, in any competition, it says here.

Interesting stuff in Eindhoven. PSV didn’t really get going until Donyell Malen’s deflected cross-shot put Dortmund ahead in the 24th minute changed the psychology of the game. They attacked more, Dortmund attacked less, and PSV’s wingers started to strut their stuff.
Even so, the Dortmund keeper Alexander Meyer – who replaced Gregor Kobel just before kick off – had only one fairly comfortable save to make.
45+2 min Ryerson again fouls Lozano, who again wants a yellow card. The referee tells them all to do one.
45+1 min Now Schlotterbeck is booked for hoofing Tillman up in the air. He’ll miss the second leg.
45 min PSV won’t want half-time; they’ve finally woken up and their wingers, Lozano and Bakayoko, are seeing a lot of the ball.
43 min The resulting free-kick is headed over by De Jong at the far post. A tenth of a chance maybe.
42 min Maatsen is booked for pulling back Bakayoko. Ryerson owes him an apology because the next Dortmund foul was always going to lead to a yellow card.

41 min Lozano, who is starting to cause problems, is fouled just outside the area on the left by Ryerson. Both teams are unhappy: Dortmund with the decision, PSV that Ryerson wasn’t booked. They both have a case. I don’t think it was a foul, but having given it the referee should probably have whipped out his yellow card.
The resulting free-kick is headed away by Hummels.
40 min Bakayoko runs onto a superb long pass from Boscagli, then drags the ball back to the supporting Saibari on the edge of the area. He blasts a shot that is pushed round the near post by Meyer, a decent if ultimately comfortable save.
39 min Sancho’s cutback is cleared, though he was offside anyway after going too early to receive Ryerson’s pass. Sancho is trying a bit too hard, which I suppose his understandable after the time he’s had in the last few years.
37 min: Chance for PSV! Lozano, on the left, threads a fine angled pass to find Saibari in space in the area. He clips a cross towards the unmarked Bakayoko, who runs onto the bouncing ball at the far post but knocks it tamely wide.
Not unlike Fullkrug’s chance at the other end, the bounce made left tricky for Bakayoko. Even so, it wasn’t a great effort.
33 min Lozano cuts inside Ryerson and wallops a shot is really well blocked by Sabitzer. He stays down, and replays show that he planted his foot painfully as he landed.
32 min At the moment Dortmund have a bit too much nous for PSV, who haven’t played in a Champions League knockout game since 2016.
29 min Veerman tries to score from inside his own half. It drifts over the bar, though Meyer had it covered anyway.
28 min: Another chance for Tillman! He boots the advertising board in frustration after planting a header wide from 10 yards. Turns out he was offside so it wouldn’t have counted, but it was a poor miss.

This might be an own goal, but Malen deserves credit regardless. He ignored Saibari’s challenge from behind on the edge of the area, veered away from Dest and drove a low cross-shot back across goal. It took a big deflection off the sliding Dest and flew past Benitez at the near post, bouncing into the net off the underside of the bar.
I’m not sure Malen’s shot was on target, though it’s hard to be sure because it only travelled a yard or so before hitting Dest. Either way, Malen has been given the goal for now. And no, of course he didn’t celebrate.

20 min Sabitzer wins a corner for Dortmund, who are the better side just now. A big inswinger from Reus brushes the head of the leaping Schlotterrbeck and flashes across the face of goal. We haven’t seen a replay but it looked like it was just too high for Schlotterbeck to control the header.
18 min: Chance for Fullkrug! Reus combines nicely with his old mate Sancho on the left and clips a cross that is hooked over from 10 yards by Fullkrug. It bounced awkwardly and he had to take it first time, so it was a relatively tough chance.

16 min: Chance for Tillman! This is starting to open up nicely. Schouten feeds a pass into De Jong, who steers a neat first-time past round the corner to the unmarked Tillman. He takes a touch on the edge of the area but then, with two defenders converging, drags a low shot wide of the far post. That was the best opportunity so far.

15 min Malen has Dortmund’s first shot on goal. He scurried away from Schouten, ran 40 yards to the edge of D and shaped a low left-foot shot that was comfortably saved by Benitez.
14 min Maatesen farts around in his own half and is robbed by Tillman, who runs into the penalty area and then tries a square pass to De Jong. Schlotterbeck deflects it towards his own goal and Meyer jumps to make a comfortable save.

Luuk de Jong, 33, is having a helluva time in his second spell at PSV. He has already scored 27 times in all competitions and is on course to have his best goalscoring season. He has scored 32 on three occasions, twice for PSV and once at Twente.

Preamble
Hello and welcome to live coverage of PSV v Borussia Dortmund in the last 16 of the Champions League. As a neutral it’s hard to know what to feel about this match: excitement that a relative outsider will reach the quarter-finals, or weariness that two big clubs – both former winners – have no realistic chance of going all the way this year. Dunno. Maybe going a long way is the new all the way.
This tie should tell us how good PSV are. They’re miles clear domestically, having won 20 and drawn the other two league games, but they only just got out of their Champions League group and were thrashed 4-0 at the Emirates.
Borussia Dortmund have the opposite problem. They were impressive winners of a group of death – PSG, AC Milan, Newcastle – yet sit a miserable 17 points the Bundesliga leaders Bayer Leverkusen, a not entirely surprising hangover from last season’s shattering finale. If they’re not careful, they won’t qualify for next season’s Champions League at all.
That can wait for tomorrow. Tonight is all about the 2023-24 tournament, and the chance to put one foot in the last eight.
