PSV name their price for Cody Gakpo after impressive World Cup amid Newcastle United interest

PSV Eindhoven are looking for a club record fee as they look to cash in on talismanic forward Cody Gakpo. The Dutch international was one of the standout performers for Louis van Gaal's side at the World Cup in Qatar and has been touted for a move away from the Eredivisie side since the summer.

Chronicle Live understands Gakpo was on Newcastle United's wish list before the World Cup, but the 23-year-old's stock has risen considerably after scoring three goals in five appearances in Qatar. The winger, who is also capable of playing through the centre, has scored 13 goals in all competitions for PSV this season, picking up where he left off last season, with 21 goals in 47 appearances.

Journalist Fabrizio Romano has shared the latest on Gakpo with PSV director Marcel Brands naming the club's asking price. Gakpo was heavily linked with a move to Leeds United last summer, with Manchester United also keen on signing the forward, but neither were able to meet that asking price.

PSV are reportedly looking for a club record transfer fee - the current fee stands at €45million for Hirving Lozano who was sold to Napoli back in 2019/20.

PSV director Brands said: "Only 10/12 clubs can pay afford Cody Gakpo in January. Let’s see if it will happen — it has to be PSV's record sale and also the right bid for Cody’s plans. We have still no official bids. Let’s see if some club will pay big money in January."

Gakpo himself has kept his cards close to his chest after Van Gaal told him to stay with the Dutch outfit during the summer. The former Manchester United boss was right with that call, with interest now pouring in from some of the top clubs across Europe.

However, Gakpo told De Telegraaf: "As it stands now, I will still be playing for PSV after the winter break. But as I said before the start of the World Cup: we will see what will happen."
