PSNI issue advice for the public after deliberate fire at derelict hospital

The PSNI has issued advice to the public following a fire at a derelict hospital site on the outskirts of Derry city in the early hours of this morning.

The fire was reported at the old Stradreagh Hospital site in Gransha.

The Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service (NIFRS) has now identified "deliberate ignition" as the cause of the blaze.

The police have now issued advice to the public following the fire.

A spokesperson for the PSNI said: "Colleagues from NIFRS are dealing with a fire at a derelict building in Gransha Park this morning. Residents are urged to be aware of subsequent dust/smoke, and to please keep doors and windows closed."

In an update this morning, the fire service said the fire has now been dealt with.

"NIFRS was called to a fire at the old Stradreagh Hospital site in Derry/Londonderry at 1.23am on Wednesday, April 5, 2023. A derelict building approximately 50m x 40m was on fire," a spokesperson for the NIFRS said.

“At the height of the incident four Fire Appliances from Crescent Link, Northland and Limavady Stations and Specialist Appliances from Strabane, Dungiven and Crescent Link were in attendance."

The spokesperson added: “The incident was dealt with by 4.32am and the cause of the fire is believed to be deliberate ignition.”
