Nearly 13 months on from a nerve-jangling tie, Paris Saint-Germain and Liverpool met again in the Champions League with the holders emerging victorious in the quarter-final first leg thanks to goals in either half from Desire Doue and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.
Doue broke the deadlock inside the opening 11 minutes on Wednesday night as his shot took a wicked deflection and lopped over Giorgi Mamardashvili into the back of the net. Then after Ousmane Dembele had missed a golden opportunity to double PSG’s lead, Kvaratskhelia made no mistake from close range to ensure the holders will head to Anfield for the second leg next week with a two-goal advantage.
Liverpool failed to muster a single shot on target through the 90 minutes in Paris as they were outclassed en route to falling to a fourth straight away defeat in all competitions. In the other quarter-finals played across two nights, Bayern Munich, Arsenal and Atletico Madrid recorded first leg wins over Real Madrid, Sporting and Barcelona respectively away from home.
