PSG 'make contact' with Marcus Rashford as manager makes public transfer declaration

Marcus Rashford is a target for Paris Saint-Germain - and he could join a strike force starring Lionel Messi, Neymar and Kylian Mbappe this season.

The England international, 24, has suffered a nightmare spell at Manchester United and a new start could relaunch his career before the World Cup. He only has one year left on his contract until June 2023, although that does contain the option of a further year.

Ligue 1 champions PSG want a forward who can play in a central role or out wide. New PSG boss Christophe Galtier, who replaced the sacked Mauricio Pochettino earlier this summer, even admitted as such in a press conference on Thursday afternoon.

French sports daily L'Equipe has claimed talks have already started with Rashford's entourage, although no contact has been made with United. Arnaud Kalimuendo has left PSG for Rennes and Mauro Icardi could also depart before September's deadline.

It's claimed talks are progressing 'positively' between Rashford's representatives and PSG, although the transfer is still in its infancy. It's also unclear if the player wants to end his long affinity with United. He's been at the club for 17 years, joining aged seven.

"We want another striker to come in," Galtier told reporters. "With a busy schedule, we want arrivals. The club is working, I am in direct contact with [football advisor] Luis Campos. Luis is in direct contact with our president [Nasser Al-Khelaifi]. We must not make any mistakes. Will this player arrive? We don’t know. It has to be a real plus."

PSG know Rashford well after he scored a last-minute winner for United in a Champions League last 16 tie in March 2019. At the time, the forward was one of the game's brightest youngsters. Now, just two months away from his 25th birthday, his future looks in doubt.

Rashford scored 22 goals in all competitions during the 2019/20 campaign and followed that up with another 21 strikes the next season. Yet he struggled last term, scoring only five goals and losing his place in Gareth Southgate's England side.

Rashford will need to do something special if he's to regain his spot ahead of this year's World Cup in Qatar, which starts in November. He struggled in United's most recent game against Brighton, missing a sitter as they lost 2-1 at home to Graham Potter's side.

Rashford has scored 93 goals in 304 games for United since his debut in February 2016. He's won the FA Cup, EFL Cup, Europa League and Community Shield during his time at Old Trafford. He was part of the England side that reached the final of Euro 2020 last summer.

On Kalimuendo's exit, Galtier added: "Things were very clear about Arnaud Kalimuendo. He was coming off a very good season at Lens and he wanted the same amount of playing time. He prepared himself very well for the team.

"I knew from the start that Arnaud would leave us. He had the great merit of concentrating on his preparation. He will arrive, I think it will be in Rennes, and he will be ready."
