PS Plus April 2023 release time and free games confirmed, including Sackboy

The PS Plus Essential games lineup launches today for PS4 and PS5 users and features three new games to sink your teeth into.

As is standard, the first Tuesday of the month heralds a brand new selection of PS4 and PS5 games joining the PS Plus Essential lineup after the announcement last week. April’s lineup is no fool as we’re being given two exciting titles from the PlayStation back catalogue Sackboy: A Big Adventure and Tails of Iron, as well as a brand new day-one release from the developers of the extremely popular co-op horror game Dead By Daylight titled Meet Your Maker.

The games typically release on to the service at 10am BST / 5am EDT / 2am PDT, so they’re already available. Sometimes the PS Plus section of the PlayStation website is a bit late to update, so if you can’t see the new titles, just search for them and they should be available for free.

Back to the Sack

One of PlayStation’s greatest mascots makes his return to PS Plus this month with the PS5 launch title Sackboy: A Big Adventure. You can run, jump, and dance through 90 levels alone or with a group of four pals as you seek to stop the evil Vex from taking over Craftworld. The game won three BAFTAs in 2021, taking home British Game and Family Game, as well as at picking up a win at the BAFTA Children and Young People Awards in the Game category. It’s a great time for all of the family, plus it hosts one of the best licensed soundtracks of any game, which is always a plus.

One game that I probably wouldn't recommend for all of the family is Meet Your Maker, which blends in-depth level creation with fast-paced FPS gameplay reminiscent of games like Doom and Prodeus. The game launches today alongside the PS Plus April 2023 lineup, so there's bound to be a high number of players creating their own sadistic death traps for you to raid, or a selection of lab-rats to test your own base building skills on. While the game sadly doesn’t support crossplay at launch, you’ll still be able to try out maps created by players on PC and Xbox platforms (sadly, the game isn't coming to Xbox Game Pass yet).

Finally, there's the hand-drawn indie gem Tales of Iron which places you in the shoes of a young rat prince who must reclaim his kingdom after his father is slain by the evil frog menace. Developer Odd Bug Studio describe the game as an “epic RPG Adventure with punishingly brutal combat". Tails of Iron also comes with the Bloody Whiskers expansion included for free which adds a post-game questline.
