Protests Erupt Outside Columbia University Campus

Demonstrators protest in solidarity with Pro-Palestinian organizers on the Columbia University campus, in New York

At Columbia University, a stark contrast exists between the peaceful atmosphere inside the campus gates and the tense situation outside where protesters have gathered on the street. The encampment within the campus is accessible only to those affiliated with the university, requiring a Columbia ID for entry. Inside the encampment, various activities are taking place, including teach-ins, poetry readings, film screenings, and students working on assignments or creating posters.

Meanwhile, in other parts of the campus, students are seen enjoying meals, studying, and capturing memorable moments by taking graduation pictures. Some students are even spotted in graduation gowns, strolling down Broadway, with risers being set up for an upcoming commencement ceremony. Notably, a group of students is holding large American flags beneath the iconic Butler Library.

Despite the serene scenes within the campus, the students are not immune to the tension emanating from the ongoing protests just outside the university gates. A group of pro-Palestinian protesters has gathered, chanting slogans like “I believe that we will win” and “Long Live the Intifada.” In response, a smaller group of pro-Israeli protesters has formed, countering with chants of “Down with Hamas” and “Victory to Israel.” The situation is being closely monitored by a line of New York Police officers stationed along the street.
