Protestors clash with gardai in city centre after asylum seeker's camp set alight

There have been further clashes between protestors and gardai outside the International Protection Office on Mount Street in Dublin city centre.

After lunchtime today, hundreds of protesters had attended a demonstration at Custom House Quay over upcoming hate speech laws. A small group of people then marched towards an international protection office near Mount Street, where dozens of tents set up by refugees were lined up on the street outside.

A number of garda units, including one Public Order unit, attended the scene. No arrests were made during the protest, according to gardai.

It comes after an asylum seeker's encampment on Sandwith Street was set alight by protestors following two days of violent clashes between protesters and refugees. One man in his 30s was arrested under the Public Order Act. He is due in court later this month.

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar as among politicians who condemned the violent scenes. As the Irish Examiner reports, Varadkar said "we cannot tolerate actions such as this."

A Garda spokesman told Dublin Live: "A number of Garda units including one Public Order unit deployed in "soft cap" attended the scene of a protest in the Mount Street area of Dublin 2 on the afternoon of Saturday 13th May 2023.

"No arrests were made. All persons present later dispersed from the scene. At this time, no further incidents have been reported in the area."
