'Protestival' set to sail despite big police presence

A council has defended approving festive events next to Australia's largest annual coal protest as police prepare for potential on-water conflict and arrests.

Billed as a 'protestival', climate action group Rising Tide is in the middle of a six-day demonstration in Newcastle, culminating with a planned weekend blockade of the city's port.
