Muslims staged a protest in Sirwar of Raichur district on Wednesday following reports of desecration of a portrait of Tipu Sultan.
A group of youths and its leaders expressed anger over the incident. They put tyres on the main road and set fire to them. They demanded that the culprits be arrested immediately.
Tahsildar Ravi Angadi and Circle Inspector of Sirwar Shashikanth M. rushed to the spot and convinced the protesters to disperse by promising immediate arrest of the culprits.
Thereafter, the tahsildar washed the portrait and offered puja.
Superintendent of Police Nikhil B. told The Hindu that an FIR has been registered.
A team of police officers has been formed to arrest the culprits.
