Prosecutors seek £195k from Natalie McGarry's husband after her embezzlement conviction

Prosecutors seeking £195,000 from Natalie McGarry will try and get cash from her former councillor husband’s bank account.

McGarry, 41, was sentenced to two years at Glasgow Sheriff Court in June 2022 which was reduced on appeal. She was found guilty of taking £19,974 while treasurer of Women for Independence.

McGarry also embezzled further £4,661 while treasurer, secretary and convener of the Glasgow Regional Association of the SNP. McGarry - who denied the accusations - had been the MP for Glasgow East between 2015 and 2017.

A proceeds of crime hearing in which prosecutors are looking to recover monies embezzled by McGarry took place today. McGarry was not in attendance at Glasgow Sheriff Court.

Sheriff Barry Divers asked Allan MacLeod, defending, for McGarry's benefit amount from the embezzlement. The advocate replied: "It keeps going up, we are dealing with £195,241.31."

A statement of information on McGarry's finances say that the amount she can pay back is around £1,600. Sheriff Divers asked: "This is from the bank account of David Meikle, is that her partner?"

Mr MacLeod replied: "Yes."

The advocate stated that there are 65 pages of items needing to be vouched for spanning from 2011 to 2022. Mr MacLeod said: "The financial consultant David Anderson said this is the first time he has come across the Crown looking at finances from the date of the end of the charges to the current day.

"This creates complications for the defence as her bank account was closed in 2016."

The hearing was continued until later this month for more information to become available.
