Proposed plans would see Edinburgh student flats built above Tesco supermarket

Images have been released of proposed plans for student accommodation in the Canonmills area of Edinburgh.

New Town and Broughton Community Council took to social media and said that a resident ' highlighted a potential redevelopment' around Tesco supermarket.

The plans by architecture and interior design business ICA Studio are amongst a portfolio of student accommodation in Edinburgh along with a project in Gorgie that will be made up of 248 and a 240-bedroom student block over a mixed-use development in Haddington Place.

The Broughton Road development proposal design is 'on the drawing board' , according to ICA studios and the accommodation would be built around and above the supermarket.

This comes after plans for student accommodation to be built in Eyre Place were delayed earlier this year. While the Development Management and Sub Committee have said that they recommend the application to be granted, the plans attracted nearly 400 objections from locals.

As Edinburgh Live previously reported, they argued that the plot on Eyre Place is "totally unsuited" to student accommodation, with fears the six-storey block would tower over neighbouring properties and block out sunlight. Councillors also stressed the need for more affordable housing to be delivered on on vacant land across the capital and the proposals have since been amended.

It now include nine residential townhouses - and recommended councillors gave plans the green light.

However, members of the planning sub-committee agreed unanimously in January there should be a hearing for the applications, which will allow residents and the developers, CA Student Living/Novel Student, to address the committee before a final vote is held.
