'Proper Scouse nan' with 'Merseyside's biggest family' described as 'inspirational'

ECHO readers have shown their appreciation for a Kirkby nan who has 93 great-grandchildren.

Nellie Dougherty, who is approaching her 91st birthday, claims that she has the biggest family in Merseyside. The 90-year-old, who lives in Kirkby, has a family tree of over 150 family members - including 93 great-grandchildren and 15 great great-grandchildren.

The family plans to meet on July 30 to celebrate her 91st birthday. Described by family members as "the most loving and caring person you could ever meet", Nellie still buys every member of her family and all their partners a present on their birthdays and at Christmas.

One of Nellie's granddaughter's, Julie Gibbons, told the ECHO : "My nan just shops all year round - she says that's what keeps her going. She buys for everyone, including all the in-laws. We're always telling her she does not have to do that but she says she could never not get presents.
