Ryan Gosling's big sci-fi blockbuster Project Hail Mary is a certified hit both at the box office and with critics, so much so that it's not impossible that a sequel could materialize.
THR cites an unnamed insider close to Project Hail Mary, saying it's "not out of the question" that MGM Amazon could make a sequel. That said, it seems it all comes down to author Andy Weir, the writer of the novel Project Hail Mary, and whether he's got another story to tell.
Weir has previously stated he's not against a sequel, and has even had a few ideas about where Project Hail Mary 2 could go, though he hasn't decided whether he's got another book in him yet.
Project Hail Mary netted north of $150 million globally in its first weekend, with a take of $80.5 million in North America alone, the second highest opening for a non-franchise, non-sequel in 10 years, after Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer, which took in $82.5 million back in 2023.
Our own critic gave Project Hail Mary four-out-of-five stars, saying, "The film adeptly captures the sense of wonder and thrill of progress that goes hand in hand with space exploration, with Grace and Rocky as our heart-stealing guides. Project Hail Mary is ultimately the kind of big-budget, inventive, and just plain fun filmmaking that makes heading out to the theater worthwhile – and proves worth the expense."
