Proclamation ceremonies for King Charles III you can go to in the North East

Ceremonies around the North East will proclaim Charles III as the new King this weekend.

Charles formally ascended to the throne on Saturday morning following a meeting of the Accession Council at St James's Palace, London. A proclamation was then read to the public from a palace balcony at 11am.

As per tradition, local proclamations will be made in towns and cities across the UK on Sunday. They include events in Newcastle, Durham, Morpeth, North Shields and South Shields, with more likely to be confirmed across the region.

North Tyneside Council explains: "In the United Kingdom, a ceremonial body called the Accession Council meets at St James’s Palace upon the death of the monarch to formally proclaim the accession of the successor to the throne. A new monarch succeeds automatically under the terms of the Act of Settlement 1701 and the proclamation merely confirms the name of the heir who has succeeded.

"The proclamation or announcement of the new monarch’s name, is signed by Privy Counsellors and is read in London on the day following the death of the monarch ‘proclamation day’. The following day the proclamation is cascaded and read in Belfast, Cardiff and Edinburgh. Thereafter, relayed in Towns and Boroughs throughout the country."

If you want to see a bit of history taking place live, you can head over to one of the local proclamations to watch your area welcome the new King's reign.
