Probe launched after several teachers at same school are diagnosed with cancer

  • Massachusetts health officials have launched an investigation into multiple breast cancer diagnoses among teachers at Uxbridge High School.
  • The Massachusetts Department of Public Health will visit the school on Thursday to conduct extensive testing, including air quality, interior and exterior building systems, and an evaluation of the site's past uses, having already ruled out water supply as a risk factor.
  • DPH officials have said that there is “no evidence of immediate danger in the building and no reason to limit access to or use of the facility at this time.”
  • Beyond environmental assessments, health officials will also research the medical and genetic histories of the affected teachers to determine the statistical probability of common causes for the cancer diagnoses.
  • Medical experts, including Dr. Sam Nardello, indicate that a direct link at the school is improbable, explaining that most breast cancers are associated with environmental factors like smoking and alcohol, rather than rare chemical exposures.
