Scottish independence group announces no Edinburgh march this year

A SCOTTISH independence group has announced there will be no march organised in Edinburgh this year.

All Under One Banner (AUOB) had originally planned a march for September 7 in the capital but agreed to reschedule the event for a later date after Stand Up to Racism organised a demonstration on the same day in Glasgow.

The group has now confirmed there will be no march scheduled for Edinburgh this year.

AUOB had called on independence supporters to “stand alongside fellow Scots, anti-racists, trade unionists and pro-Palestinian activists” in a show of unity against the far-right at the time.

In a statement, they said they have decided to take time to consider the organisation’s plans for 2025, adding that they need to go “beyond marching”.

The group confirmed they will continue to plan marches in the future, having organised 42 demonstrations in support of Scottish independence since October 2014.

A spokesperson for AUOB said: “We wish to announce that All Under One Banner won't be holding a march for independence this year in Edinburgh.

“Marches are a central element of the struggle; enabling the public to express their desire for an independent Scotland, bonding and binding supporters together from across all demographics, injecting vital energy into activists, sustaining and empowering the movement through unity in action, enabling all linked aspects of independence to be majorly visible and audible together, promoting the cause at home and across the world.

“Since 12th October 2014 AUOB has been holding annual march for independence demonstrations across Scotland with 42 to date.

“AUOB will continue to hold marches as it is clear that Scotland's cause needs its own street demonstrations and AUOB remains as steadfast now as when the organisation began.

“However, it is crucial that our movement starts to think about what else we can do to accelerate the campaign and realise our country.

“We need to continue marching and also go beyond marching. And so AUOB’s national committee will take some time to consider the organisation’s plans for 2025 and this will be published in the new year.”

The spokesperson added: “Scotland shall be an independent country.”
