Recent days have seen the establishment of pro-Palestinian encampments by students at various universities in the United Kingdom. At Newcastle University, a small encampment advocating for Palestinian rights has been set up on the lawn in front of the college's buildings, as evidenced by videos and images circulating on social media.
The group, known as 'Newcastle Apartheid Off Campus,' has erected around a dozen tents on the lawn, some adorned with Palestinian flags. Their mission is to challenge Newcastle University's partnership with defense companies supplying Israel. In a social media post on Wednesday evening, the group announced their intention to stay overnight, with their numbers steadily increasing.
Similar demonstrations have taken place in other English cities, with students in Leeds and Bristol also pitching tents outside their university buildings in protest against the conflict in Gaza. Additionally, a camp has been established at Warwick University in central England, where 'Warwick Stands With Palestine,' a coalition of student and staff organizations, is leading an ongoing demonstration on campus.
The University of Warwick has acknowledged the demonstration and stated that they are engaging with the organizers. Emphasizing the importance of freedom of speech in university life, the institution recognizes the right of students to express their views through peaceful protests.
