A MILITARY airport in Fife will no longer allow private jets to land at the facility after a key part of its infrastructure was switched off for good.
The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has confirmed that private planes can no longer land at Leuchars Station, according to The Courier.
The change comes after the primary and secondary radars at the airfield were withdrawn from service on July 1.
A primary radar is used in aviation to detect and track aircraft, while a secondary radar enhances the system by providing pivotal information like identification, altitude, and flight status.
With both radars being switched off, Leuchars airfield will no longer be open to civilian air traffic.
However, an RAF spokesperson said the change will not affect military air traffic control in Scotland.
They said: “As part of a long-planned change, the airfield radar at Leuchars Aerodrome is no longer operational.
“Military air traffic control across Scotland remains unaffected.
“Consultation took place with all airspace stakeholders ahead of this change and the small number of private air traffic can continue to use alterative locations.”
The MoD closed Leuchars as an active station in March 2015 in an effort to cut costs.
However, the facility has still been used by private civilian aircraft for people predominantly visiting St Andrews for golf events.
In October 2025, Defence Minister Luke Pollard confirmed that 100 private aircraft had landed at Leuchars Station since October 30 2023 after being questioned by Dundee MP Chris Law.
