Prithvi Shaw to play for Northamptonshire in County cricket

MUMBAI: Indian batsman Prithvi Shaw will play for Northamptonshire in County cricket after featuring in the Duleep Trophy, TOI has learnt. An official announcement in this regard should come in the next few days. This will be Shaw’s maiden stint in English county cricket. Three former India captains of repute-Bishan Singh Bedi, Sourav Ganguly and Anil Kumble have represented the Northants in the past.

“Prithvi will be playing in four-day County Championship matches and in the Royal London One-Day Cup (50 overs tournament). Before that, he will play in the Duleep Trophy semi-final (against Central Zone), and if necessary, in the final (July 12-16),” a reliable source told this paper.

Last season, Shaw smashed a mammoth 379 against Assam, going past Sanjay Manjerekar's record (377) to become the highest run-getter in a single innings for Mumbai. It was also the second-highest score by a batsman in the history of the Ranji Trophy.

The 23-year-old has played five Tests (339 runs@42.37, one hundred (on debut in 2018 against West Indies at Rajkot, 2 fifties), six ODIs (189 runs@31.50) and One T20I for India. The Mumbaikar has scored 3679 runs in 42 First-Class matches@51.09, with 12 hundreds and 15 fifties.

Rated highly by many at the start of his career, Shaw endured an ordinary time in the IPL this year, managing to score just 106 runs in eight matches@13.25 for the Delhi Capitals. The talented opener would hope to recover his form and stake a bid to make a comeback into the Indian team by making a bucketful of runs in County Cricket, something which veteran batsman Cheteshwar Pujara successfully did in 2022.
