Prisoner dead after being discovered in his cell at HMP Parc in Bridgend

A prisoner at HMP Parc in Bridgend has died, authorities have confirmed. The name of the man, who died on Friday, has not been released.

Parc is the only privately-run prison in Wales and is managed by security company G4S. A spokesman for the company said: "Sadly a prisoner at HMP Parc died on Friday, August 12, and our thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time.

“Staff at HMP Parc take the health and wellbeing of prisoners extremely seriously. We provide an extensive range of services including a dedicated safeguarding officer on-site and all prisoners have 24 hours access to the Samaritans lines as well as being able to speak to Samaritan trained prisoners about their mental health. We also provide an in-house health care team. All of our staff undertake mental health training during their employment.”

The man's next of kin have been informed.

As with all deaths in prison the case will be investigated by the Prison and Probation Ombudsman. The pandemic was brutal on Wales' inmate population because they had such limited time outside their cell. This article breaks down what it was like for inmates during the height of Covid.

For confidential support the Samaritans can be contacted for free around the clock 365 days a year on 116 123.
