Prison officer who sent inmates nude photos just months into the job is jailed

A female prison officer who sent intimate images of herself and had phone sex with two different inmates has been jailed for 14 months.

Emma Webster, 34, signed letters to prisoner Bradley Brammall "Your future wife" and had spoken on the phone to him 17 times with the prisoner using a smuggled-in phone at HMP Lincoln.

Eight days after the mum-of-two split from Brammall she swapped night shifts with colleagues and started flirting with inmate Jimmy Bennett - who is behind bars for a vicious knife attack on an 18-year-old.

During one of the 75 prohibited phone calls to Bennett, the operational grade prison officer appeared to "pleasure herself" over the phone, Lincoln Crown Court heard.

Webster, of Lincoln, admitted misconduct in public office from August 18, 2021, to November 14, 2021.

Prosecutor Lauren Fisher said Webster smuggled contraband into the prison including letters and intimate photographs, but there was no evidence of any physical sexual contact.

She also accepted gifts from prisoners including an unknown item valued at £200 and had “unauthorised contact” with prisoners outside of work duties including letters and 75 phone calls to Bennett and 17 phone calls to Brammall.

Ms Fisher said an investigation began after a new phone number under the name of “Emma Smith” appeared on Brammall’s prison list of contacts.

The prison began eavesdropping on the conversations and recognised the caller’s voice as Webster.

During one call, Webster was out walking her dog, and Brammall asked her to go into a field or hedge. Brammall then told Webster “he could do with oral sex”.

The pair talked about “having sex” during a further call, but they broke up in October after Webster met a mutual friend of Brammall’s and a gift was not delivered.

Within eight days Webster had begun an inappropriate relationship with Bennett, who she knew before he was jailed, the court heard.

Prison staff then noticed Webster swapped night shifts and Bennett was frequently pressing his cell buzzer.

Letters written to Bennett were signed "your future wife" from Webster.

When staff searched his cell they found a photo of Webster in their underwear.

Pieces of paper with the name Emma Smith and a phone number were also discovered.

Webster at first told cops she was only being friendly with Brammall but admitted having a non-sexual relationship with Bennett.

She admitted contacting Bennett under the name Emma Smith using a different SIM card than the number she used for Brammall.

Neil Sands, mitigating, begged for mercy saying his client had two children to look after and had co-operated with the investigation.

Passing sentence Judge Catarina Sjolin Knight said: “It is clear you were chasing, rather than just being manipulated.”

“You had a position of trust as an operational grade prison officer at HMP Lincoln, a Category B prison.

“In that prison, you misconducted yourself by first having a relationship with one prisoner, and then another.”

“A sexual relationship with a prisoner leaves staff open to corruption.”
