An Irish prison officer has been injured by an inmate following a horror incident at a facility in Dublin.
Dublin Live understands that the male officer was attacked this morning with a plastic shiv by an inmate, who is currently serving a life sentence for murder. The incident happened at a medical facility in Smithfield that the prisoner was attending when accompanied by prison officers.
The male prison officer received an eye injury during the incident, and it is understood that his colleagues rushed to provide assistance and the inmate was brought back to Mountjoy Prison.

The Irish Prison Service has confirmed that an investigation is underway. A spokesman told Dublin Live: "The Irish Prison Service is aware of an incident that occurred with an escort from Mountjoy Prison earlier today.
"An Garda Síochána have been informed and therefore the Irish Prison Service cannot comment on an ongoing investigation."
