The Principality Stadium has dropped a massive hint on its Instagram and Facebook accounts that Coldplay will be bringing their latest tour to Cardiff. The post follows days of speculation as fans tried to decode messages in the band's latest music video, which included cryptic references to the Welsh capital.
The latest - and biggest - clue was a picture posted by the Principality Stadium showing the cover art for Coldplay's latest album up on the big screens at the stadium. The post is captioned "#MOTSWT," which is the official hashtag for the Music of the Spheres World Tour.
The tour is currently underway in the middle of a six-night run at Wembley Stadium, although tonight's show was cancelled due to the rail strikes, which include Transport for London today. The band has been dropping various hints about the tour's upcoming 2023 dates, which they teased in an email that went out to fans:
The band last played in Cardiff in 2017 - but before that, it had been 17 years since they brought their debut album Parachutes to the Welsh capital. Their hints this week included a message in a made-up alphabet called Bloom in the music video for the new Coldplay single Humankind, which included the phrase "PRINCIPALITY STADIUM."
The music video also teased shows in a number of other cities including Amsterdam and Zurich - but Manchester was the only other venue in the UK. It makes sense that the band would come to Cardiff a year after their London shows, because that's exactly what they did in 2017.
No further details have been announced about the potential Cardiff show - or shows - on the tour, but this social media post appears to all but confirm that the stadium rock chart-toppers will be visiting Wales in 2023. When the rumours first emerged, WalesOnline readers were thrilled by the news.
Matthew commented: "Casual Coldplay fan before getting tickets last minute for one of their 2017 shows. Quite frankly one of the most superb thing's I've ever witnessed. A Coldplay gig is more than just a show, it's an event in itself."
Some were quick to call the band "boring" and "rubbish," but many others shared their memories of seeing the band in the past. Adrianne said: "If you’ve never been to a Coldplay gig, you really can’t comment. They put on an absolutely epic show, the best I’ve ever seen. If it’s not for you, just scroll on by."
