In 1993, a bedtime conversation between then-Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles was leaked just a month after the future King and Princess Diana had announced their split.
The six-minute intimate exchange - that was recorded in 1989 while Charles and Diana were still married - sent shock waves throughout the nation as it confirmed their marital affair.
It was coined 'Camillagate' and 'Tampongate' because it involved the heir to the throne joking that he would like to "live inside [her] trousers" and be reincarnated as a tampon.
At the time, Camilla was married to her ex-husband, Andrew Parker Bowles, though two years after the transcript was leaked, they also got a divorce.
And Diana's personal bodyguard, Ken Wharfe, revealed the princess' sassy response to the news in his book, Guarding Diana: Protecting The Princess Around The World, in 2017.
He wrote that Diana triumphantly said "game, set and match" while clutching a copy of a newspaper containing the full transcript of the conversation.
The former royal guard said criticism of the now King brought Diana joy, although the contents of the illicit conversation made her feel queasy.
"She told me that she had been genuinely shocked by some of the baser comments, in particular the Prince's tampon reference," he wrote. "'It's just sick,' she said repeatedly."
Wharfe described the backlash as "savage" and noted that "establishment figures were appalled with some even questioning the Prince's suitability to rule".
Charles' friend, Howard Hodgson, explained in his biography that Charles was "troubled" by the recording of the telephone call that was captured by an amateur radio enthusiast.
He claimed: "He remains deeply ashamed of the embarrassment that he caused his mother, deeply sorry for the pain it caused both his and Camilla's children."
The conversation included Camilla lamenting that she "can't bear a Sunday night without" her lover, while Charles quipped, "I fill up your tank!"
"What about me? The trouble is I need you several times a week," Charles continued. After joking that he would become a tampon, he continued: "My luck to be chucked down a lavatory and go on and on forever swirling round on the top, never going down."
The transcript ended with Charles and Camilla arguing about who was going to put the phone down, and issuing gushing declarations of love at least a dozen times.
