Investigators remain frustrated over their inability to locate a white Fiat Uno said to have been in the tunnel on the night Princess Diana died. They believe that the unknown driver of the vehicle could help them piece together exactly what happened on that tragic evening in Paris.
Diana's life was cut short exactly 25 years ago when the black Mercedes she was travelling in crashed inside a tunnel in the French capital on August 31, 1997. She was 36 years old.
Speaking to the Channel 4 documentary, Investigating Diana: Death In Paris, Martine Monteil, head of the French Brigade Criminelle, said: “I have frustration about the Fiat Uno. For sure, it’s out there. Unfortunately, we don’t have it.”
Two exhaustive inquiries in France and the UK ruled that Diana's driver Henri Paul, was responsible for her death and that of her lover Dodi Fayed. They ruled that he lost control of the Mercedes at high speed after consuming alcohol.
But detectives said a couple at the scene witnessed a white Fiat Uno emerging from the tunnel being driven by a man who was focused on his mirrors. Traces of white paint were discovered on the black Mercedes.
Fabrice Cuvillier, of the Brigade Criminelle, told the programme: “It’s not a hallucination. It’s not something we threw out to create a diversion. It exists. We did not find this Fiat.”
