Princess Anne carried out 214 engagements in 2022, making her the hardest-working royal of the past 12 months.

King Charles took part in 181 royal engagements, making him the second most regularly serving – with many of his duties occurring while he was still Prince of Wales before the Queen’s death in September.

Prince Edward, the Earl of Wessex, was third – having completed 143 engagements. All three are of the same generation and children of the late Queen and Prince Philip. Their other sibling, Prince Andrew, has largely been absent from public life since the scandal involving his friendship with US sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Anne, known as the Princess Royal, is known for keeping a packed diary and in November completed 30 engagements, including a visit to the Falkland Islands. Her total of 214 even beats her 2021 figure of 179, despite the death of her mother and subsequent funeral.

Prince Philip died in 2021, a year when the Queen – then in her nineties – completed 151 engagements. In his last full year before taking the crown, Charles completed 160 duties.

The research was conducted by Reboot SEO company based on entries to the Court Circular.

In 2022, The Prince of Wales carried out 126 engagements, his wife Catherine completed 90 and the Queen Consort 102. The Duke of Kent carried out 78 engagements and Princess Alexandra 44.

King Charles, who is preparing to make his first Christmas Day speech this weekend, was on Tuesday seen for the first time on banknotes – which will come into circulation with his portrait from 2024.

On Tuesday, the royal family are set to take part in a pre-Christmas dinner at Windsor Castle with the Queen Consort and Earl and Countess of Wessex reportedly among the first to arrive. It is traditionally one of the last events before the Firm travels east to Sandringham for the festive season.
