England midfielder Jill Scott has been congratulated by Prince William after she announced her retirement this afternoon.
The Duke of Cambridge hailed the 35-year-old, from Sunderland, as "a pioneer of Women's football and a great team player" before joking that he would not miss her "slide tackles". He added that it had been a pleasure to get to know Scott and congratulated her on her career.
Scott earned 161 senior international caps after making her England debut in 2006 and scored 27 goals for the national side. She announced her retirement today in a post on Twitter and an article on The Players' Tribune.
