Prince William 'clashed' with Queen over wedding detail when he married Kate Middleton

This month marks 11 years since the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge married in a huge fairy tale wedding at Westminster Abbey.

Kate looked stunning in her gorgeous Alexander McQueen wedding gown while Prince William looked dashing in his red tunic of the Irish Guards.

Among the high profile guests at the wedding were all of William's royal relatives including his proud grandmother the Queen, who had a small hand in helping to organise the nuptials.

But it appears that Her Majesty clashed with her grandson and her second-in-line to the throne over one detail of the wedding - William's outfit.

In an interview given after the wedding, William admitted that he was forced to back down and follow the Queen's wishes, as she didn't want him to wear his first choice of outfit.

William said at the time: "What I really wanted to wear was the Irish Guards frock coat."

He had worn the frock coat during previous royal engagements but had been appointed Colonel of the regiment two months before the wedding - and the Queen wanted him to wear the red tunic.

William added: "We had a couple of discussions on this matter but, as I learnt growing up, you don’t mess with your grandmother.

"What she says goes."

However, there were certain royal traditions that the Queen was happy with the royal couple dispensing with on the big day.

For example, William and Kate were allowed to draft their own guest list with the support of Her Majesty.

William said in 2012: "Things were rapidly building up steam towards the wedding.

"I was given a list in the first meeting of 777 names and not one of them I knew.

"It was a bit daunting and it was like, that seems to be the guest list sorted – no room for friends or family.

"I wasn’t too happy about it so I rang [the Queen] for a bit of moral support and a bit of backup.

"She said, 'don’t be so ridiculous, get rid of the list, and start from your friends'."

Meanwhile now, fast forward almost 11 years from the royal wedding, and the couple are now the parents of three young children - Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.
