Prince William and Princess Kate Middleton shared a message of support for athletes as the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games kick off. The royal couple expressed their excitement for the upcoming sporting events and wished the best of luck to the ParalympicsGB athletes and all participants at #Paris2024.
The Paralympics, which commenced on Wednesday and will run until September 8, have evolved into a major global sporting spectacle, featuring over 4,000 athletes with disabilities. In the previous 2020 Tokyo Paralympics, Great Britain outperformed the U.S. in medal standings, securing 41 gold and 124 total medals compared to Team USA's 37 gold and 104 total medals. China led the medal count with 96 gold medals and 207 overall.
Prince William and Princess Kate, known for their support of athletics, did not attend the recent Olympics but sent a video message to Team Great Britain, commending their achievements and expressing admiration for the athletes' inspirational performances.
The royal couple's latest message coincides with their summer retreat in Scotland, where they traditionally spend part of August at Balmoral Castle. King Charles III and Queen Camilla were welcomed to the royal residence by the 5th Battalion of the Royal Regiment of Scotland on August 19, with Prince William and Princess Kate joining them later.
Public appearances have been limited for Princess Kate due to her undisclosed battle with cancer, which she disclosed in March. She revealed undergoing chemotherapy as a preventive measure and shared her experiences of navigating the treatment process, emphasizing the importance of patience and self-care.
