Prince William and Kate Middleton's early romance recreated in new series of The Crown

Prince William falls head over heals for his future wife Kate Middleton in scenes for the new series of The Crown.

Filming for the sixth season of the hit Netflix drama is currently underway in Scotland, with the actors playing the future King and Queen of England seen out and about at the couple's old university St Andrews.

William and Kate first met in 2001 while they were both students at the university, where their friendship eventually blossomed into a romance.

The final series of The Crown will focus on the early days of Kate and William's romance - with Ed McVey, 22, taking on the role of the future Head of State.

Love interest Kate will be played by 19-year-old newcomer Meg Bellamy.

In new pictures from the upcoming show, William can be seen gazing at Kate as she walks past him on set.

Their relationship continued to go from strength to strength following their time at university and William and Kate announced their engagement in 2010.

As they announced their union, the couple shared how their romance blossomed in the early 2000s.

"William wasn't there for quite a bit of the time initially, he wasn't there from Freshers' Week, so it did take a bit of time for us to get to know each other, but we did become very close friends from quite early on," Kate recalled.

It's been claimed that Kate's stint on a catwalk for a student fashion show, wearing a sheer dress, caught Prince William's attention and saw their friendship turn into something more romantic.

It's not known how much of Prince William and Kate's early relationship will feature on the sixth series of The Crown, with the show also focusing on the death of Princess Diana and the aftermath of her tragic passing.

It's been reported Dominic West's version of Prince Charles - now King Charles - will be distraught after seeing the body of his former wife.

"They actually made Elizabeth climb into a coffin and play dead as Diana.

"Viewers will see a French priest administering the last rites for Diana as she is pronounced deceased," one onlooker on set told The Sun.

"Prince Charles enters the room and is in floods of tears. In his hysteria he notices that Diana is missing an earring. It is all he can focus on as grief envelops him."

The episodes covering the aftermath of Diana's 1997 car crash in Paris will also show a fictional version of the heartbreaking moment young Prince William and Prince Harry walked behind their mother's coffin.
