Minneapolis musician Tyka Nelson, the only full sibling of the legendary artist Prince, passed away at the age of 64 on Monday at North Memorial Health in Robbinsdale, Minnesota. Her son confirmed the news to The Associated Press.

Born in 1960 to jazz musician John L. Nelson and Mattie Della Shaw, Tyka Nelson followed her passion for music, becoming a singer-songwriter who released four albums during her career. Her debut album, 'Royal Blue,' released in 1988, featured hits like 'Marc Anthony’s Tune' and 'L.O.V.E.,' which made their mark on Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.

Describing her music as adult-contemporary and easy-listening, Tyka Nelson's sound was distinct from her brother's iconic Minneapolis sound. Despite their musical differences, she cherished her role as Prince's sister, emphasizing that it had been a lifelong identity.

Following 'Royal Blue,' she released three more albums: 'Yellow Moon, Red Sky' in 1992, 'A Brand New Me' in 2008, and 'Hustler' in 2011. Tyka Nelson is survived by her two sons, President and Sir, as well as five grandchildren.

Known for her efforts to preserve Prince's legacy, Tyka Nelson was scheduled to retire and perform a farewell concert in Minneapolis in June. Unfortunately, illness prevented her from taking the stage. Despite this setback, she had plans for a mixtape release and was working on a memoir.

After Prince's passing in 2016, Tyka Nelson and her five half-siblings inherited equal interests in his estate. Three of the siblings, including Tyka Nelson, sold their stake to a music publishing company, which later transferred the interests to an affiliate.

Representatives for Paisley Park, Prince’s private estate and museum in Chanhassen, Minnesota, have not yet commented on Tyka Nelson's passing. The family has requested privacy for the services, and in lieu of flowers, they have asked for support in caring for one another.
