Prince Harry says he and Meghan Markle were 'brought together for a reason'

Prince Harry has stated he and wife Meghan Markle were brought together for a reason.

Harry, 37, explained on Saturday night how the couple share 'a commitment to a life of service', as they collected a joint award together on stage.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were special guests at the NAACP Awards, where they were honoured with the prestigious President's Awards to mark their special achievement for 'distinguished public service'.

Past recipients of the honour include Colin Powell, Condoleezza Rice, LeBron James, Rihanna, Muhammad Ali and Jesse Jackson.

As they took to the stage to make their acceptance speech, the parents-of-two looked stunning in evening attire for the star-studded event.

Harry opted for a traditional black tuxedo suit for the couple's televised appearance, while Meghan, 40, looked breathtaking in a unique one-shoulder two-tone blue gown.

"Before I begin, we would like to acknowledge the people of Ukraine, who urgently need our continued support as a global community," Harry began in his speech on Saturday night.

"I also echo the immense gratitude for tonight, both for this award and this community for welcoming me so warmly."

The former senior royal then went on to discuss the very different upbringings he and his wife experience growing up.

"I think it's safe to say that I come from a very different background from my incredible wife, yet our lives were brought together for a reason," the dad-of-two stated.

"We share a commitment to a life of service, a responsibility to combat injustice and a belief that the most often overlooked are the most important to listen to."

Harry and the California-born actress tied the knot on May 19 2018, following the announcement of their engagement the year before.

In January 2020, the couple announced their plans to step back from their role as senior members of the royal family, and relocated to Meghan's home state of Los Angeles.

Speaking on stage on Saturday night, the former Suits actress acknowledged the global events that have occurred since the couple and their two children moved to America.

"We moved to California, my home state, shortly before the murder of George Floyd," Meghan explained within her empowering speech.

"For Black America, those nine minutes and 29 seconds transcended time, invoking centuries of our unhealed wounds.

"In the months that followed, as my husband and I spoke with the civil rights community, we committed ourselves and our organisation, Archewell, to illuminating those who are advancing racial justice and progress."

The mum-of-two went on to thank people for joining her and Harry in their humanitarian work across the world.

"This is the era of the digital justice movement. We are proud to partner with NAACP and each of you to translate the vital efforts of those who came before us to the modern challenges that exist ahead of us," the former actress said on stage.

"Thank you so much for joining us in this work, and thank you again for this incredible honour. Truly."

Meghan concluded the couple's joint speech on a sweet note, saying: "My mom's here with us tonight, and we all feel very proud. Thank you."
