Prince Harry reveals he would 'roll joint' at pal's house while Meghan and Archie slept

Prince Harry revealed he would 'roll a joint' at his friend Tyler Perry's house while wife Meghan Markle and son Archie slept in another room.

The Duke of Sussex's highly anticipated memoir Spare hit shelves today, January 10, as the father-of-two shares the shockingly intimate and detailed story of his life. In the book, Harry recalls his and Meghan's decision to step down as senior royals and start a new life in California.

Speaking of this time, Harry, 37, recalled 'smoking weed' while his family stayed at actor Tyler Perry's mansion as they house-hunted for themselves. The Gone Girl actor became a saving grace for the couple, who later made him the godfather of their daughter Lilibet, as he allowed the Duke and Duchess to stay in his home.

In the book, Harry tells readers he loved Tyler's house and described the mansion as 'Xanadu'. Despite loving their temporary home, the Duke was concerned about the safety of the house and would find himself wandering around at night checking the doors and windows while his family slept.

In his memoir, he writes: "Then I'd sit on the balcony or the edge of the garden and roll a joint. The house looked down onto a valley, across a hillside thick with frogs. I'd listen to their late-night song, smell the flower-scented air. The frogs, the smells, the trees, the big starry sky, it all brought me back to Botswana."

Cannabis has been legal for recreational use in California for those over the age of 21.

In the recent six-part Netflix docu-series Harry & Meghan, Tyler spoke out about why he offered the couple his house months after they stepped down from royal duties.

The actor explained he got in touch with Meghan, 41, before her royal wedding to Harry in 2018 after stories about her estranged relationship with her father, Thomas Markle, circulated in the press. He said: "When my life changed and success started to come, family members became different people, and I know how hurtful that can be and how horrible it can be.

"I immediately empathised with her. This was before the wedding and I sent her a note, just praying for her just to be able to move through it and hold on, and let her know that everything in her life had prepared her for this moment, or so I thought."

In the series, Harry and Meghan acknowledged the fact they hadn't yet met Perry, 53, when he allowed them to stay in his home and labelled the actor an "amazing friend". Sharing a video from their flight overseas, Harry said: "This is the current situation, thanks to another amazing friend who we’ve never met, but who believes in us and who wants to help."

Spare by Prince Harry and published by Penguin Random House is out now.
