The children of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will now be officially a Prince and Princess after the Queen's death.
Existing rules - dating back to 1917 - specify that the grandchildren of a monarch are automatically made Prince and Princess and given the title of his, or her, royal highness (HRH). This comes despite previous confusion following the interview Meghan Markle gave Oprah Winfrey, when she said she had expected Archie to be made a prince.
This had not previously happened as, by the rules codified in a "letters patent", it is only the children of the eldest grandchild of a monarch are made HRH. This applied to Prince William's children. It has been understood that while Prince Charles, the new King had an intention to "slim down" the monarchy - but as it stands the rules mean Archie and Lilibet are HRHs and a prince and princess.
