Spotify partners with a long list of celebrity podcasts, but Meghan Markle's Archetypes is no longer part of their ranks after getting the chop following a sole season.
In mid-June, a joint statement read: "Spotify and Archewell Audio have mutually agreed to part ways and are proud of the series we made together."
However, the official Archewell website still includes information about the Spotify deal with their audio information.
The site currently reads: "As part of the partnership, The Duke and Duchess through Archewell Audio produce podcasts and shows that build community through shared experiences, powerful narratives, and universal values."
In fact, the site still leads back to an old Spotify press release, explaining the initial £18million deal. It boasts an anticipated "multi-year partnership." The podcast, in reality, started in 2022 and never made it to 2023.
Over the course of the podcast, Markle spoke with guests including Serena Williams, Mariah Carey, Paris Hilton, and more. It was rumoured that Taylor Swift had received an invite to be on the show, but declined.
According to the Wall Street Journal, staff from Archewell said that the show "often lacks direction". They also said that Prince Harry and Meghan “seem surprised by the work required to finish entertainment projects."
Plus, it was reported that they would not be getting the full payout of their deal. Reports suggest the pair didn't make enough content to meet that quota.
Spotify executive, Bill Simmons, called Harry and Meghan "grifters" on his own podcast. He also said he had a Zoom call with Harry to brainstorm on podcast ideas.
He said: “What does he do? It’s one of those things where it’s like, what’s your talent? Why are we listening to you? So you were born in a royal family and then you left."
Now, though, Meghan said she plans to take her content creation elsewhere. The Wall Street Journal revealed that the former Suits star plans to "develop more content for the Archetypes audience on another platform." As of now, that platform has not been revealed and the website maintains that the content is Spotify exclusive.
Regardless of the Spotify deal, Prince Harry and Meghan do have a proven track record in media. When Archewell Production partnered with Netflix in September 2020, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle premiered their documentary by December 2022. The viewership actually broke records.
