Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are "playing a power game" with their Coronation response, claims a royal historian.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have finally announced their plans for King Charles' Coronation, with Harry attending the historic event while Meghan will remain in California.
The Duchess will stay at home with their children Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.
The announcement of the couple's decision comes following months of speculation about whether or not they would be at the Coronation.
Historian, writer and broadcaster Tessa Dunlop has suggested Harry and Meghan knew what they were doing by dragging out their decision.
"They were playing a game, of course they were. It's about power. It's a power game," she said.
Speaking to OK!, Tessa added: "They consider themselves above the rules. I'm sure with the potential viewing appeal of the Coronation, they're eye candy, they're global brands, so they were holding out."
In a statement, the Palace confirmed Harry's attendance: "Buckingham Palace is pleased to confirm that the Duke of Sussex will attend the Coronation Service at Westminster Abbey on 6th May.
"The Duchess of Sussex will remain in California with Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet."
Harry's visit to the UK is expected to be a short trip. He is set to miss a number of Coronation events, including a huge party with other royals.
It has been reported that there were a number of factors which influenced the Duchess' decision not to fly over for the historic event.
After the announcement was made, Omid Scobie - a journalist whose work focuses on the Duchess of Sussex - tweeted: "I understand that Archie's fourth birthday (also on May 6) played a factor in the couple's decision.
"Expect it to be a fairly quick trip to the UK for Prince Harry, who will only be attending the coronation ceremony at Westminster Abbey."
It is understood that the Sussexes have also been concerned about how their attendance might be received by the British public, especially after their bombshell Netflix series dropped at the end of 2022.
