King Charles left a short-and-sweet handwritten message atop the coffin of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, during her funeral Monday in London.
“In loving and devoted memory. Charles R,” the note reads, according to CNN, which reports that the “R” refers to “Rex,” or “king” in Latin.
Charles, 73, became king of the United Kingdom following the death of Queen Elizabeth on Sept. 8 at age 96. Her death ended a record-setting 70-year reign that began when she was just 25 years old.
Monday’s funeral took place at the centuries-old Westminster Abbey church, not far from Westminster Hall, where the queen’s coffin had laid in state since Wednesday for members of the public to pay their respects.
The Royal Standard flag, the Imperial State Crown and flowers were also placed on her coffin during Monday’s funeral.
About 2,000 people attended the service, including Charles’ family members such as wife Camilla, the queen consort, and sons Prince William and Prince Harry.
William’s elder two children, 9-year-old Prince George and 7-year-old Princess Charlotte, were also in attendance.
Queen Elizabeth will be laid to rest at St. George’s Chapel near Windsor Castle during a smaller service Monday. She’ll be interred next to husband, Prince Philip, who died last year at age 99.
