The new Prince and Princess of Wales were left in stitches after a hilarious exchange with a grandmother during their visit to Wales today (Tuesday, September 26). The Royal couple visited Anglesey and Swansea in their first appearance in the country in their new roles.
Well-wishers lined the streets to get a glimpse of William and Kate, who made time to speak to as many people as they could. They started their day by arriving at RNLI Holyhead Lifeboat Station where they met crew, volunteers, and people who have been helped by the charity.
It was during this visit to the station that they had one especially touching and humorous interaction. Dozens of people had waited patiently outside the RNLI base hoping to catch a glimpse of the royal couple and among them was a new grandmother, who exchanged a friendly “bore da” with Prince William as he approached, reports the Daily Post.
The couple spoke to the woman and mentioned their three children, leading to Prince William joking: “We’re looking for a babysitter.” But it was the woman’s reply which caused the biggest laughs of the day. In response to the Prince’s offer, she fired back: “I would, but I’ve got no teeth.” Through laughter, a relaxed Prince William replied: “That doesn’t matter."
The hilarious exchange continued as the woman held hands with William and Kate and told them that she had forgotten to bring their gift. She explained: “I’ve forgotten the Welsh cakes in the rush on the A55,” adding: “I thought s***, the royals are coming to Holyhead.”
As William and Kate began to slowly move down the line to greet more excited locals, the grandmother called them back, having forgotten to introduce her first grandson. Clearly enjoying the conversation, Prince William hovered behind his wife to finish the chat.
With the woman’s hands now clutching both his arms, Prince William told her: “Do you know what, we’d have a lot of fun together. I can see a real budding friendship, (between) you and me.” At one point the woman even playfully pushed the future king and clapped her hands as the Prince let out a burst of loud laughter.
Both the Prince and the woman appeared invested in the conversation, which led to a very touching moment between the two. As William clasped his hands around hers, the woman smiled and told him: “I love you, you’re just so real.” She then lent forwards, adding: “Diana would be so proud.”
As he left, the Prince alluded to future visits, telling the woman: “Lovely to meet you, we’ll chat again next time we’re up.” The visit is the first of many royal engagements expected to take place in Wales in the coming months.
Having been named Prince and Princess of Wales upon King Charles’ accession to the throne, William and Kate have stated their commitment to strengthening their relationship with the people of Wales. You can see our lives updates of the Royal visit to Wales today as it happened here.
