Prime Video has found its new lead for the highly anticipated "God of War" series, closing a casting saga that stretched on for nearly two months.
The show's production had been paused entirely as the studios searched for someone capable of stepping into one of gaming's most physically demanding roles.
Dave Bautista Officially Cast as Kratos in 'God of War'
Variety confirmed that Dave Bautista has officially closed his deal to play Kratos in the Amazon Prime Video adaptation, following weeks of reports that he was in early talks for the role. Production is expected to resume in Vancouver this fall, with every scene originally filmed featuring Ryan Hurst now needing to be reshot entirely with Bautista in the lead.
The show remains a two-season order from the start, with both seasons still planned to shoot back-to-back.
Ronald D. Moore continues as showrunner, writer, and executive producer, meaning the creative direction of the series itself has not changed despite the shift at the very top of the cast.
Dave Bautista Replaces the Injured Ryan Hurst
Hurst was originally announced as Kratos back in January 2026, but he tore his bicep while performing a stunt on set in late June, four months into filming. The injury required surgery and a recovery period that would have delayed production until 2027, a timeline Amazon and Sony ultimately decided was not workable, leading to the difficult decision to recast the role entirely.
Bautista brings a physical presence that many outlets have already pointed to as a natural fit for the character. Standing at a massive, heavily built frame with a signature bald head, the former WWE wrestler has spent years playing larger-than-life, physically imposing characters, most notably "Drax the Destroyer" across multiple "Guardians of the Galaxy" films and other Marvel projects.
That combination of build, screen presence, and experience carrying a franchise role appears to have made him one of the first names studios considered once Hurst's exit became official.
Amazon Prime Video's 'God of War' Adaptation
The series is based on Santa Monica Studio's "God of War" franchise, specifically drawing from the 2018 reboot and its Norse mythology setting, which reintroduced Kratos as an older, more restrained father living in Scandinavia alongside his son. Callum Vinson remains attached to the project as Atreus, meaning the central father and son dynamic at the heart of the story stays intact despite the recasting.
The rest of the previously announced cast is also expected to remain in place, including Teresa Palmer as Sif, Ed Skrein as Baldur, and Mandy Patinkin as Odin, among others. Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios continue co-producing the series together, alongside PlayStation Productions and Tall Ship Productions.
With production set to restart this fall in Vancouver, the show is moving forward on a tighter timeline than the delay initially suggested, giving fans a clearer picture of when new footage featuring Bautista as Kratos might eventually surface.
