Prime Video top 10 movies — here’s the 3 worth watching right now

Jason Statham as Adam Clay in "The Beekeeper" now streaming on Prime Video.

The fireworks may be over, but this year's biggest blockbusters are still lighting up Prime Video's top 10 list. When I'm trying to figure out what to watch this week, I make a beeline for the streamer's top 10 most-watched movies ranking.

Sure, not everything there is guaranteed to be a hit, but it's as good a place to start as any. And if you need help figuring out which top 10 movies are actually worth the hype, we got you covered. We've rounded up the best three movies in Prime Video's top-10 list, which includes a new high-octane action movie starring Jason Statham.

This list is based on the Prime Video top 10 movies list as of 10 a.m. ET on Monday, July 8. So without further ado, let's dive into my top picks...

Best movies in the Prime Video top 10

'The Beekeeper' (2024)

Everything about “The Beekeeper” screams shlocky action movie that only a Jason Statham superfan could enjoy, and yet, it’s so self-aware of its ridiculousness that you can’t help but get swept up in the madness. And with David Ayer behind the camera, you can look forward to some well-crafted action sequences that will get your heart pounding.

In this action-thriller, Statham plays Adam Clay, a former member of a secret society of super soldiers known as Beekeepers. Having retired from the clandestine organization, Clay is now living a simple life as an actual beekeeper (clearly this man loves bees!). But he returns to action when a group of scammers prey on his vulnerable landlady and Clay becomes consumed with a need for vengeance. Expect fast-paced action throughout, and also be prepared for loads of bee puns. — RM

'Minions: The Rise of Gru' (2022)

“Despicable Me 4” arrived in theaters last week, so if you’re in a Minions mood, why not enjoy the previous adventure of the miniature yellow irritates? “Minions: The Rise of Gru” is the second prequel to the “Despicable Me” franchise, and packs the same zany humor, colorful animation and over-the-top characters fans have come to expect. Yes, the plot is pure nonsense, and the Minions are divisive, but if you embrace the childish humor this franchise offers plenty of no-frills fun.

Set in the 1970s, “Minions: The Rise of Gru” is pretty much exactly what the name suggests, it tells the origins story of Gru (voiced by Steve Carrell) and explores how he became the supervillain we met in the first “Despicable Me” movie back in 2010. However, nobody said becoming the world’s most infamous villain would be easy, and Gru’s plans for world domination set him on a course for a showdown with the super evil team, the Vicious 6. — RM

'The Idea of You' (2024)

Over the weekend, I watched Netflix’s new comedy “A Family Affair”, and it made me appreciate Prime Video’s “The Idea of You” even more. Both cover roughly the same ground, an unexpected relationship between a young celebrity male and an older woman, but while “A Family Affair” is silly and bloated, “The Idea of You” offers engaging dramatic beats, a surprisingly strong original soundtrack (“Dance Before We Walk” may have crept into a few of my Spotify playlists) and a winning performance from Anna Hathaway.

In “The Idea of You”, Solène (Hathaway) is a 40-year-old single mom, forced to take her daughter to the Coachella when her flakey ex-husband drops out last minute. At the festival, she accidentally finds herself in the dressing room of boyband singer Hayes Campbell (Nicholas Galitzine), and a romantic spark flies between the seemingly mismatched pair. Hayes sets about winning Solène’s heart, and while the middle-aged mom is swept up in the romance of it all, the real world is just around the corner to test their blossoming bond. — RM
